On April 24, the U.S. Department of Education issued guidance to schools in response to concerns regarding the suspension of the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) for students and families selected for verification.

Outlined below are the acceptable forms of documentation we can accept effective immediately for both the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 academic years for students who are selected for income verification.

Tax Return Filers:

In lieu of using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool, or obtaining a tax return transcript from the IRS we can now accept a SIGNED paper copy of the 2015 IRS tax return that was filed with the IRS. Please note, the copy of the IRS tax return must be SIGNED by at least one of the tax filers and contain BOTH pages.
Non Tax Filers:
We are no longer required to collect the IRS non-filing letter for individuals who did not file a 2015 tax return. Instead we can now accept:

A SIGNED statement certifying that the individual has not filed and is not required to file a 2015 income tax return, and a listing of the sources of any 2015 income earned by the individual from work and the amount of income from each source. If the individual reports zero sources of income they must address in their statement how they were financially supported in 2015 (Example: student was supported by their parents).

A copy of IRS Form W–2, or an equivalent document, for each source of 2015 employment income received by the individual.
