General Qualifications

In order to receive state, university, or federal student aid funds, you will need to meet the following requirements:

  • Graduate from high school (or earn a high-school equivalent certification)
  • Be accepted for enrollment in college courses working toward an associate, bachelor, or graduate degree (some credential programs are ineligible for financial aid)
  • Be a United States citizen or eligible non-citizen (qualifying undocumented students may still receive state aid)
  • Have a valid Social Security number
  • Certify that you intend to use financial aid for educational purposes, that you are not in default on a federal student loan, and that you do not owe money on a federal grant

Common Aid Types

Your financial aid package will likely be made up of multiple types of financial aid. Some aid, such as loans, will have to be paid back, while other aid will not.

You may choose not to accept all of the aid offered to you. There is no penalty for declining or taking out partial loans.

Some aid, such as scholarships, may come with restrictions on how it can be used. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of all aid you accept.

Grants do not need to be repaid. Funds can come from WSU, the State of Washington, or the federal government.

Waivers are discounts applied directly to your tuition. Your total amount of waivers and tuition-specific aid cannot exceed the amount you have been charged for tuition.

Scholarships are awarded based on a wide variety of criteria. Good grades will always help, but you can also receive scholarships based on financial need, academic interests, talents, community service, leadership, and career goals.

Loans are financial aid which must be paid back. Nearly every student who applies is eligible to receive federal student loans. You do not have to accept the entirety of your offered loans.

Types of available loans include:

  • Unsubsidized student loans
  • Subsidized student loans
  • Parent PLUS loans
  • Graduate & professional Loans
