Gloria Barron Prize for Young Heroes

Eligibility

  • Between the ages of 8 and 18 (not yet age 19)
  • Permanent residents of and currently residing in the U.S.A. or Canada
  • Currently working on an inspiring service project or have done so within the past 12 months
  • Working as an individual to lead their service work. The Barron Prize does not accept applications from large groups of young people.

Governors’ Scholarship for Foster Youth

Eligibility

  • Be on track to graduate from a Washington high school by June 2018.
  • Have a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.0.
  • Plan to enroll full-time by the fall 2018 at an eligible college or university in the state of Washington.
  • Have resided in Washington state for at least three academic years prior to graduating from high school or obtaining a GED.
  • Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA)
  • If under 18, students must currently have an open dependency court order that resulted from intervention by Washington state court on their behalf and they have been placed in any of the following living situations:
    • Foster Care
      • Family Foster Care, with non-relative adults
      • Kinship Care, with relatives
      • Residential/Group Care
    • Dependency Guardianship (with either relatives or non-relatives)
    • Guardianship (with either relatives or non-relatives)
  • If over 18, students must have lived in a court-ordered foster care, dependency guardianship or guardianship until emancipation, (age 18).

OR

  • The applicant is currently, or was until age 18, in federally recognized care.  The applicant has been classified by the United States government as an unaccompanied minor refugee, is a legal permanent resident and is in legal care, (or was in care until emancipation) of  a private non-profit agency in Washington state.

OR

  • The applicant is currently, or was until age 18, under a dependency tribal court order that placed the student outside the home.

Applicants are not eligible if they:

  • Have been adopted.
  • Returned to live with their parents before turning 18, (regardless of whether the court continued to remain involved).
  • Have had their dependency court order dismissed.
  • Were not dependent to federal, state or tribal court prior age 18.

How to Apply

  • Submit an online Governors’ Scholarship application.
  • Ensure your recommender submits a letter of recommendation online. You will be asked to provide name and email address of your recommender in the online application. College Success Foundation will contact your recommender to complete this requirement.
  • Email the following documents to scholarshipservices@collegesuccessfoundation.org :
    • Transcript: You must submit an unofficial transcript from your high school showing grades through fall 2017 and cumulative GPA.
    • 2018-2019 Student Aid Report summary results of your FAFSA or WASFA (ALL pages).
    • Copy of Dependency Court Order: provide a copy of the official court document reflecting the current placement situation. Copies can be obtained from your social worker.

L. Ron Hubbard’s Future Writers Library Contest

Eligibility

  • Students of any age are eligible to enter this writing contest as long as they are amateur writers.
  • Students must submit a piece with a science fiction, fantasy, or horror with fantastic elements theme, up to 17,000 words. We cannot consider poetry or works intended for children.

Manos de Esperanza Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Candidates must:
    • Maintain a minimum of 2.8 GPA
    • Demonstrate financial need (see Application)
    • Be a full time enrolled student attending an accredited community college, four-year university or graduate/professional program.
    • Demonstrate involvement in the community
    • An interview with the scholarship committee of Manos de Esperanza.
    • Attend our annual benefit event held in December

National High School Essay Contest

Eligibility

  • Please note: Students whose parents are not in the Foreign Service are eligible to participate if they are in grades nine through twelve in any of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, the U.S. territories, or if they are U.S. citizens attending high school overseas.
  • Students may be attending a public, private, or parochial school.
  • Entries from home-schooled students are also accepted.
  • Previous first-place winners and immediate relatives of directors or staff of the AFSA, the U.S. Institute of Peace, Semester at Sea, and National Student Leadership Conference are not eligible to participate.
  • Previous honorable mention designees are eligible to enter.

  • Complete the online registration form.
    • Student registration forms must have a teacher or sponsor name. That person may review the submitted essay and act as the key contact between participants and AFSA.

Pride Foundation Scholarship

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be a resident of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, or Washington but may study elsewhere. Applicants are considered a resident of one of these states if they:
    • currently live within that state and have done so for at least 3 months prior to the application date; OR
    • have lived within that state for at least one year at any time within the five years prior to the application deadline
  • Applicants must be pursuing post-secondary education. This includes community college, four-year public or private college or university, certificate programs, vocational/technical/trade programs, law school, medical/dental/veterinary school, or graduate education.
  • Show leadership potential either within the LGBTQ community or within their field of study
  • Lack a broader LGBTQ community support system
  • Face additional barriers to educational access, including students who are economically, racially, socially, geographically, or politically disenfranchised
  • Demonstrate significant financial need

The Princeton Prize in Race Relations

Eligibility

  • Must be a high school student (in grades 9-12) in the participating regions (Seattle is one of them)
  • Must have had a significant positive effect on race relations in your school or community through your volunteer efforts within the last 12 months

Thermo Fisher Scientific Antibody Scholarship Program

Eligibility

  • Must be 18 years of age or older as of Aug. 9, 2023 and enrolled as a graduate or undergraduate student at an accredited U.S. college or university for the fall 2019 semester.
  • Must have declared major of biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or related life science field
  • Graduate students must have a cumulative graduate GPA of minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and have received a cumulative undergraduate GPA of minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Undergraduate Sophomore, Juniors, and Seniors must have a cumulative college GPA of minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Undergraduate Freshmen must have a cumulative high school GPA of minimum 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
